ETGS April 10, 2010 Regular Meeting

ETGS to Present Family Tree Maker 2010 Lecture

The East Texas Genealogical Society will hold its regular monthly meeting on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. in the Taylor Auditorium at the Tyler Public Library, 201 S. College, Tyler, TX. During a special two-hour program Tresa Tatyrek will introduce East Texas Genealogists to the new version of Family Tree Maker 2010. This version allows genealogists to keep 90 percent of their genealogical research in FTM including digital images, catalogs of those images, word documents of stories for formatting purposes, and research notes.

Family Tree Maker, the most popular software used by genealogists, is owned by Ancestry.com, and Ms. Tatyrek is one of their Beta Testers. She has been working on this new version for several months and will share her knowledge both with her two-hour lecture and a special detailed instructional handout in PDF format that will be available at the meeting for $5.
Ms. Tatyrek has been interested in family history and genealogy since childhood, and began doing extensive research in 1997 using Family Tree Maker as her genealogy program. The research has evolved into tracing over forty family lines for her family and her husband’s. She served as president of the Dallas Genealogical Society for three years and was their webmaster for six years. DGS honored Ms. Tatyrek with their Volunteer of the year award in 2005 and bestowed their Award of Merit on her in 2007. (www.magnoliamanorgenealogy.com.)

After refreshments the Computer Interest Group lecture time will be used by Ms. Tatyrek to complete her two hour lecture on FTM 2010.

From Tyler Morning Telegraph, Friday, March 19, 2010, Page 3B:

“Camp Fannin Reunion Set Saturday

The annual reunion of the Camp Fannin Association will begin at noon Saturday [March 20, 2010] with a memorial service at the Camp Fannin Veterans Memorial on the grounds of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, CFA President John Anderson said.

The memorial is located at the U.S. Highway 271 entrance to UTHSCT.

The public and all veterans of all branches of service are invited to the service. Texas State Rep. and Retired Army Lt. Col. Leo Berman, will be the keynote speaker. Camp Fannin veterans will present the colors and Dr. Ken Muckleroy of Bugles Across America will close the service with "Taps."

Immediately following the memorial service, a Member's Luncheon and Annual Meeting will be held in the UTHSCT Cafeteria.

Camp Fannin, U.S. Army Infantry Replacement Training Center, opened in March 1943 and was deactivated in June 1946. It is estimated that more than 200,000 men trained at the camp during that time.

"Camp Fannin is the only known World War II Army IRTC to have an active association," Anderson said. "The CFA was created in 1990 and has held annual reunions since 1992."

Spirits of Oakwood, Tyler TX 3/27/2010

Spirits of Oakwood Cemetery Tour

The annual "Spirits of Oakwood" Cemetery Tour, sponsored by the Oakwood Cemetery Restoration Committee, is scheduled for March 27 at Tyler's Texas Historic Cemetery, located at the corner of Oakwood and Palace streets.

Tour guides will lead groups through the cemetery, stopping at designated graves to see and hear that person "come to life," Committee spokesperson Maxine Herbst said.

"Oakwood is the final resting place to many of Tyler's early settlers, war veterans, politicians and some individuals with intriguing stories. The event is intended to be entertaining and historical," she said.

The tours start at 1 p.m., and the last tour will start at 4:30 p.m. Tours begin every 15 minutes.

The cost is $6 per person; children under age 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

Proceeds from the event are used for the repair of old grave markers that have been broken or damaged. For information, call Mrs. Herbst at 903-593-4642.

Oakwood Cemetery is a city maintained cemetery, but the city is barred from spending public money for the repair of broken markers. Over a period of time many of the markers have been broken. The Oakwood Cemetery Restoration Committee began the 'Spirits of Oakwood' tours as a way to raise the needed funds for the repairs, to educate people about the history of Tyler and Smith County, and to let them see that the cemetery is a place in which all Tylerites should be very proud.
